FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Newport, New Hampshire, February 3, 2023 - The Newport Area Chamber of Commerce is excited to announce the acquisition of the Depot Building at 19 Depot Street, Newport, NH from our community partners Bar Harbor Bank and Trust. Built in 1897, this single story historic railroad station, once the B & M Railroad Passenger Station, is capped by a flared hip roof, typical of stations of the late 19th century, inspired by the work of Boston architect H,H. Richardson, is an iconic building nestled just behind Newport's beautiful Main Street. Sold in 1958 after passenger service discontinued, the Depot Building has seen multiple businesses over the decades.
The Newport Chamber had a unique opportunity to obtain this building, to become the permanent home of the Chamber, in gratitude to a generous gift by Bar Harbor Bank and Trust. Understanding the valuable work the Newport Chamber provides our community, Bar Harbor donated the building to the Chamber, so we can continue serving and growing our community.
“For more than 135 years, Bar Harbor Bank & Trust has been helping Northern New England businesses achieve their financial goals and that has included close partnerships with local chambers of commerce,” said Jack Frost, VP Director of Community Giving for Bar Harbor Bank & Trust. “We are proud to donate the Depot Building to the Newport Area Chamber of Commerce and look forward to the amazing work they will do there.”
We cannot thank Bar Harbor Bank and Trust enough for this donation that will serve the Newport Area Chamber of Commerce not just for today, but years to come! We look forward to restoring the beautiful building, having a permanent place to operate out of, and filling an open spot in our downtown. Renovations are set to begin this winter and spring, and we actively seek funding / grant options and volunteer help to restore and improve this fixture in downtown Newport.
